World Consumer Rights Day celebrated in West Garo Hills

As part of the World Consumer Rights Day, the Department of Food Supplies and Consumer Affairs, West Garo Hills District in collaboration with the District Administration, West Garo Hills and Commerce Department, Don Bosco College, Tura observed World Consumer Rights Day on 16th March 2020 at Don Bosco College Auditorium.

Deputy Commissioner of West Garo Hills Shri Ram Singh IAS was the Chief Guest. In his speech he highlighted the need for sustaining the environment through sustainable consumer which is the theme of this years’ World Consumer Rights Day. ‘Generations today are aware of the harm they did to the environment, however there is a felt needs to sustain the ecosystem,’ Ram Singh said. He added that the generation of today is responsible for the future of the society.

Prof C.P. Suresh from the Department of Horticulture, NEHU Tura Campus highlighted on the theme “The Sustainable Consumer.” He implored those present to use organic materials to sustain the environment. He added that plastic used by consumers to buy the product from the market are dangerous to the environment and to human beings.

World Consumer Rights Day is celebrated every year on March 15. It is a day marked to raise global awareness about consumer rights and needs. Celebrating World Consumer Rights Day is a chance to demand that the rights of all consumers are respected and protected, and to protest against market abuses and social injustices which undermine those rights.

Others who spoke at the programme were Shri O. D. Sangma, Asst. Commissioner Food Safety, West Garo Hills who highlighted on ‘Food Safety,’ Shri Juniko K. Marak, Inspector of Supply, FCA & CA, West Garo Hills District who spoke on “The National Food Security Act, 2013.” Shri Nemsong M. Marak, Deputy Director Food and Civil Supply, Tura welcomed the gathering and Smt. Sugata Debnath, Asst. Professor of Commerce proposed the vote of thanks.

The students performed a prayer dance and sang a song to mark the occasion. Later the Deputy Commissioner inaugurated the ‘Food Sale’ at the Don Bosco College campus prepared by the fourth semester students of the commerce department.
