Seminar on Promoting Tuber Crops based Diet by ICAR - CTCRI

A one day seminar on the theme “Rainbow Diet Campaign: Promoting Tuber Crops based Diet for Food, Nutritional and Health Security and Creating Entrepreneurs” organised jointly by Incubation Center, NEHU, Tura campus and Don Bosco College Tura was held on 05th March 2020.

Dr. C. A. Jayaprakas, Principal Scientist (Agric. Entomology) and Head Division of Crop Production, ICAR – Central Tuber Crops Research Institute, Thiruvanthapuram gave the Keynote Address on Rainbow Diet Campaign. He explained the concept of Rainbow Diet Campaign and said that the institute is promoting the importance of tuber crop that is easily available in the market.

Dr. Sivakumar Sethuraman, Principal Scientist ICAR – CTCRI explained the various advantages of Tuber crop which is common among the tribal groups of Northeast India. He said that most of the Northeastern states suffered from deficiency of Vitamin A. “Tuber crops like sweet potatoes can help in minimizing the risks of vitamin deficiency in the Northeast.”

As part of the Campaign on Promoting Tuber Crops, a rally was organised from Chandmari to Ringre to make the public aware of tuber crop. The rally was supported by the District Police. Later the team from ICAR – CTCRI, Thiruvanthapuram conducted sessions on the usefulness of Tuber crops. The team also displayed the different entrepreneurship skills in Tuber production.

Principal of Don Bosco College, Tura Fr. Bivan Rodriques Mukhim welcomed the gathering and Dr Sasi Kumar, Incubation Centre, NEHU Tura campus proposed the vote of thanks.
