Exposure trip to the rubber plantation

Exposure trip to the rubber plantation

As part of the Students’ Development Programme (SDP) and preparing them to meet the market situation, the 3rd year B.Com students visited the college rubber plantation on Thursday, 26th July 2018.

Rev Fr. George Plattotham, Rector, Sir Timir Mandal, Placement Coordinator and Sir K. Mahimairaj (HOD) accompanied the students.

The students interacted with Rev. Fr. George and the workers.  The area admeasuring about 40-50 acres has 7,000 rubber trees that were planted in 2010.  Since May 2018, about 1500 rubber trees are being tapped for rubber on a daily basis. As a result, 48 rubber sheets processed per day have a selling rate of Rs. 116 per kg.  The rubber plantation also has 450 Sal trees around the boundary. This is to protect the rubber trees from the strong winds.

The exposure trip was a great learning experience. It was interesting to know that rubber is a tropical tree and it is not merely planted for commercial purpose but also for its industrial utility. Had it not been for the enriching interaction with the workers and their willingness to share their experiences, the trip would be an exercise in futility.

Delighted with the field trip, the students headed for the college having had their lunch in an eco-friendly environment, to touch base at 2.00 p.m.

The group expressed thanks to Rev. Fr. Bivan R. Mukhim and the Teachers who escorted them for the wonderful time outside their class-rooms. Without them this lifetime experience would not be possible. The new learning has surely opened up avenues for engaging in business and improving opportunities of gainful employability.
