Departmental seminar for the 5th Semester Honours

“Critical Analysis of Descartes’ and Locke’s Theory of Knowledge”

 

On 18th October 2022, the Department of Philosophy, Don Bosco College, Tura organized a departmental seminar for the 5th Semester Honours students on the theme “Critical Analysis of Descartes’ and Locke’s Theory of Knowledge”. The Seminar was held at 1:15 P. M in the Bosco Hall. Gracing the seminar were the Principal of the college, Rev. Fr. Bivan Rodriques Mukhim, the IQAC Coordinator of the college, Dr. Barbara S Sangma, the department faculty members and few faculties of the college. Also present in the seminar were the paper presenters from the 5th semester, the 3rd semester and the 1st semester students of the Department.

 

The seminar commenced with a welcome cum introductory speech about the theme of the seminar from Chailash Ch Marak of the 5th Semester followed by a short speech from the IQAC Coordinator, Dr. Barbara S Sangma. In her speech, Dr Barbara S Sangma inspired and motivated the students to aim high and to strive for excellence in their academic life.

 

The Principal of the college Rev. Fr. Bivan Rodriques Mukhim inaugurated the Seminar. In his inaugural speech, the principal also encouraged and motivated the students to participate in all the activities of the department as all activities are specifically intended to augment their understanding about the subject which will be of immense help for them in their future academic endeavours.

 

The seminar was chaired by the 3rd semester student, Tengsme D Sangma and the paper presenters from the 5th semester students were divided into two groups.

The first presentation on “Descartes’ Theory of Knowledge” was presented by the first group and the second presentation on “Locke’s Theory of Knowledge” was presented by the second group. Both the groups analyzed, compared and contrasted rationalism and empiricism by specifically referring to the epistemological viewpoints of Descartes and Locke. Anurag Gupta, the representative of the second group summarized and concluded that both the approaches adopted by rationalism and empiricism which represent the inductive and deductive processes of reasoning are equally significant in the process of knowledge acquisition.

 

At the end of both the presentations, participants were invited to ask questions to the respective groups which were answered delightfully by them.

The seminar ended with a vote of thanks delivered by Brinath R Marak.
