Educational Trip to Kaziranga National Park Provides Insight into Wildlife Conservation.

The Department of Zoology and Botany at Don Bosco College, Tura, organized a three-day educational tour to Kaziranga National Park, Assam, from February 16th to 18th, 2024. The trip aimed to provide 6th-semester students with firsthand experience in the field of wildlife conservation.

Led by the faculty members including Sir Tenang R. Marak, Sir Surjoron Hajong, Madam Bonme A. Sangma from Zoology, and Madam Chichi Ch. Sangma from Botany, a group of 34 enthusiastic students embarked on this enriching journey.

Kaziranga National Park, spanning 430 square kilometers, is renowned for its rich biodiversity, housing over 2200 Indian one-horned rhinoceros, a significant portion of the global population. Declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1985, the park is nestled in the Golaghat and Nagaon districts, at the edge of the Eastern Himalayan biodiversity hotspots.

The trip included an itinerary designed to explore both in-situ and ex-situ conservation efforts. Students had the opportunity to observe the behavior of wild animals in their natural habitat during a safari ride, spotting a variety of species including one-horned rhinoceros, wild elephants, swamp deer, wild buffalo, and a plethora of avian species.

Additionally, the itinerary featured a visit to the Assam State Zoo cum Botanical Garden in Guwahati, providing insights into the management and conservation of wildlife in captivity. The students also visited the Assam Don Bosco University, Tapesia Garden.
