The NSS Unit of Don Bosco College, Tura, Meghalaya, successfully conducted a four-day Special Village Camping Programme from 14 to 17 July 2025 at Henry Frassy Memorial Secondary School, Chidekgre, Babadam, West Garo Hills. Held under the theme “Youth for My Bharat”, the camp saw the active participation of 17 registered NSS volunteers under the guidance of Prof. Ferick Salnang D Sangma, the Program Officer.
Day 1: Monday, 14 July 2025 – Camp Inauguration
The camp commenced with volunteers assembling at the college by 10.00 a.m. Following a short briefing, the group departed at 11.30 a.m. and reached the campsite at Chidekgre by 3.30 p.m., stopping for essential supplies en route.
The inauguration ceremony at 6:00 p.m. was graced by Mr Salchra N. Sangma, Supply Inspector, Dadenggre Sub-Division, as Chief Guest, along with the village Nokma and Catechist. Rev. Fr. Januarius S. Sangma, Principal of Don Bosco College, welcomed the dignitaries with traditional Garo mufflers and bouquets, delivered the keynote address highlighting the role of youth in nation-building and community service, and appreciated the volunteers' commitment to the camp.
The Chief Guest in his official address congratulated the volunteers and the college for the programme on the lap of nature. He dwelt at length on the roles and duties of the inspectors in ensuring consumer rights, protection and duties, inviting the students to be aware of them to assist those who are victimised. The programme concluded with a common song led by the Principal and short speeches from the invited guests.
Day 2: Tuesday, 15 July 2025 – Plantation Drive
The day began with a nature walk at 6.30 a.m. to a nearby village location (approx. 2 km). Later, a tree plantation drive was undertaken in collaboration with local villagers. Over 100 saplings were planted in and around the school campus, promoting environmental conservation. The saplings were provided by Mrs. Salsara S. Sangma, Soil Conservation Officer, West Garo Hills. The activity reinforced ecological responsibility and community participation.
Day 3: Wednesday, 16 July 2025 – Cleanliness Drive, Awareness Campaign & Cultural Evening
After the routine morning walk, the volunteers conducted a cleanliness drive at the Garo Traditional Research Museum in Chidekgre, clearing plastic waste, dry leaves, and debris to help preserve this local heritage site.
Back at the school, a poster awareness campaign was conducted to educate villagers and children on environmental protection. Interactive games such as musical chairs and balloon bursting helped foster camaraderie between the volunteers and the local children.
In the evening, a Cultural Night was held in the school assembly hall, hosted by Miss Atchiamay M. Marak and Miss Teora M. Sangma. Volunteers and students participated enthusiastically, presenting traditional Garo songs, skits, action songs, and musical performances with social messages. In his address, Fr. Januarius S. Sangma encouraged parents to guide their children, particularly in the responsible use of mobile technology. He also stressed the importance of quality education and the dangers of substance abuse and aimless distractions.
Certificates were distributed to all 17 volunteers by Mr. Ferick Salnang D. Sangma, with the village Catechist, Mr. Sengprang Sangma and the Nokma officiating the ceremony. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Miss Bidimesa R. Marak, expressing gratitude to all participants and supporters.
Day 4: Thursday, 17 July 2025 – Departure and Reflection
The camp concluded with the team’s departure from Chidekgre at 7.50 a.m. and arrival at the college campus by 8.45 a.m. The experience proved to be transformative, fostering values of community engagement, environmental stewardship, cultural expression, and teamwork. It offered the volunteers an opportunity to reflect on their social responsibilities while rejuvenating themselves amidst the natural beauty of the village—away from the routine comforts of home.
