Seminar: Department of Sociology “A sociological Understanding of Society”

 

The Department of Sociology, the latest addition to the College made its first foray into conducting co-curricular activities for the students. Established in 2017, the Department of Sociology conducted its first seminar on 11th March, 2019 at Bosco Hall in the college campus. The seminar was attended by 66 students, some of whom made presentations on various topics which covered the basic elements of society and human behavior. The Principal of the college, Fr. Bivan R. Mukhim graced the event with his presence.

The theme of the seminar: “A Sociological Understanding of Society” was carefully selected to ensure that the participating students would be exposed to different facets of Sociology. The participants, consisting of the 2nd and 4th semester students of the department were divided into nine groups (four and five groups respectively) and were assigned topics such as Culture, Kinship, Social Group, Caste System, Marriage, Family, Community and Matrilineal Kinship System  (Garo).

The event started with a prayer and song by the 2nd and 4th semester students respectively. It was followed by welcome address by Ms. Lakyntiewhun Sohtun, the Head of Department, Sociology. In her speech, she emphasized the need of understanding society since all human beings are interconnected to one another. The students actively participatedn in the event and displayed passion and creativity with the use of slides and chart papers. After each presentation, questions were raised by the faculty members where the students were asked to explain their understanding of the topics. The event ended with the vote of thanks by Ms. Judalin Kharchandi, Assistant Professor, Department of   Sociology.

The event being the first for the department witnessed a good turn out from the college community and is a promising step in its development.
