Department of Education celebrates INTERNATIONAL LITERACY DAY

The theme of this year’s International Literacy Day is “Transforming Literacy Learning Spaces” and this is an occasion to reconsider the basic significance of literary learning spaces for fostering resilience and guaranteeing high quality, equitable and inclusive education for all.

International Literacy Day was founded by proclamation of the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation or UNESCO in 1966 to remind the public of the importance of literacy as a matter of dignity and human rights.

Department of Education, Don Bosco College Tura has observed International Literacy Day on 8th September 2022 to bring about awareness amongst students about the importance of literacy for everyone, including individuals, communities and societies. Students prepared charts and models and displayed them and the best charts were judged and awarded with medals, mementoes and certificates. International Literacy Day aims to push for intensified efforts towards more literate societies.

Lacking basic reading and writing skills is a tremendous disadvantage. Literacy not only enriches an individual’s life but it creates opportunities for people to develop skills that will help them provide for themselves and their family.

The literacy rate in the country is 74.04%, 82.14% for males and 65.46 for females. Kerala has 93.91%, Lakshadweep 92.28% and Mizoram 91.58%.

International Literacy Day is observed to inform people of their rights to social and personal development and to encourage literacy as a whole in order to end poverty, reduce child mortality, manage population growth, keep the environment clean and achieve gender equality.
